About PrescribeMap
What is PrescribeMap?
PrescribeMap is a free, open data platform that aggregates healthcare information from multiple official NHS and government sources. Our goal is to make NHS prescribing data, CQC quality ratings, and patient satisfaction scores easily accessible and comparable.
Our Data Sources
- NHSBSA English Prescribing Dataset (EPD) — Monthly prescribing data for all GP practices in England, covering every medication prescribed, quantities, and costs to the NHS.
- Care Quality Commission (CQC) — Inspection ratings for GP practices, care homes, and hospitals across five quality dimensions: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well-Led.
- GP Patient Survey — Annual patient satisfaction data covering experience of making appointments, contacting the practice, confidence in healthcare professionals, and overall satisfaction.
- NHS Organisation Data Service (ODS) — The official register of GP practices, including addresses, status, and organisational relationships.
- BNF Classification — The British National Formulary classification system used to categorise medications by therapeutic area.
How We Use the Data
We cross-reference these five datasets to create comprehensive profiles for GP practices, medications, care homes, hospitals, and geographic areas. Prescribing data is aggregated over the most recent 12 months of available data. National averages are calculated to enable meaningful comparisons.
Important Disclaimers
This site is not affiliated with the NHS, CQC, NHSBSA, or the UK Government. All data is sourced from publicly available datasets.
Prescribing data reflects NHS community prescriptions dispensed in the community. It does not include hospital prescribing. Higher prescribing rates may reflect patient demographics, local health needs, or practice size — not necessarily the quality of care. Always consult your GP for medical advice.
